School gets out this week and as we prepare for the end, we are preparing for our summer reading series. I have each of my girls pick a book series to read prior to the summer and we work our way through each book. This summer our nine-year-old has chosen to read Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

The first book, The Lightning Thief, follows Percy Jackson, who is about to be kicked out of boarding school…. again. Monsters and the gods from Mount Olympus seem to be walking off the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook, and so begins the adventure. The story is about life and love and solving riddles and it leaves young readers excited for the next book. The first two books, The Lightning Thiefand The Sea of Monsters, are the ones my daughter has already started reading. Her friends at school have already read the series so she’s motivated to catch up to them to have their own summer reading book club

When it comes to summer reading I know with an adventure like Percy Jackson and the Olympians, we are sure to have all kinds of fun this summer. Brooklin really wants to create her own treasure hunt with clues to follow just like Percy and we plan on doing that soon.
For her own afternoon adventure Brooklin loves to create simple snacks and she wanted to make a snack fit for Percy! So, she added simple yogurt, rice cakes and blueberries (because Percy loves blue foods… you’ll have to read to find out why!) for a fun snack that’s just perfect for a hot summer afternoon.

These are so simple to create and all her friends loved them at her first book club playdate.

It is great to know that you are encouraging your children to read books. This is a habit that we must teach our kids to do. My kids are grown, and my grandson is still a toddler, however i do have nephews and niece who will love this book!
