On April 12th, 2019 Laika Studios will release their newest movie, Missing Link.

I was thrilled to be invited by Laika Studios to visit their studios and their sets to see exactly where and how their newest film, Missing Link was created. Having seen their past films I really couldn’t wait to see how they created their latest piece of art. It took five years for this movie to come to life, just think about that five years is a long time!

I personally fell instantly in love with the film, Missing Link. The film features follows a myths investigator named Sir Lionel Frost who starts this adventurous movie in the Pacific Northwest. He sets off to prove that that there is a legendary creature who lives in the forest, Mr. Link.

Sir Lionel Frost is trying to show the scientific community that he is worthy of acceptance so if he finds Mr. Link he will be victorious in his pursuits.  So he teams up with fellow explorer Adelina Fortnight who is an independent adventurer who just so happens to also have the only known map to find Mr. Link. The two do find Mr. Link who renames himself Susan. The three of them set out on an adventure to help Mr. Link.

It’s all about finding where you belong and this film is incredibly heartwarming and yet filled with action and adventure. I know it’s one our entire family can enjoy time and time again and after getting to see the film and seeing how it’s made I can’t wait to share with my girls.

Laika Studios films are truly a piece of artwork. I always knew movies and films were pieces of art but literally this is a living breathing piece of art. I had never thought of a movie in terms of this before so that was interesting to me just how much goes into each scene of the film. The attention to detail and everything you can touch. Every character is actually a puppet painstaking moved movement by movement to capture every shot of the film.

For the movie Missing Linkthere 110 different sets and 65 separate locations that the artists for Laika crated for the film. Each set was created with such an incredible amount of detail. When I got to visit the set a few weeks ago I was just struck by the sheer beauty of each set.

Each detail was crafted so perfectly to fit the film and then to see each detail on the big screen. It’s hard to believe that those are actually real objects. The film is crafted so beautifully while I know it’s stop-animation it very much feels like a digital animated film. Yet it’s so complex and real the textures on the costumes and characters are some of my favorite details.

The sets are just beautiful this was among my favorites. I can’t wait to see this scene in the movie along with many of the other sets we saw.

We got to learn a lot about the technology that has gone into each of the films crated by Laika. I was struck at how over the years their technology and methods have also evolved. Using 3D printers for many of the piece for the film including creating fabrics for their own costume pieces is just extraordinary.

Everything they have on set is produced in house. The different faces and pieces are all 3D printed in house. There are teams dedicated to sewing and fixing things because as you can imagine over five years things needs upkeep.

The most interesting thing about this film is that for the first time they were able to bring down the scale of everything making miniatures. It allowed them create more and helped with the amount of space needed to produce a film of this magnitude. This was the first film they created with miniatures yet it doesn’t look like it at all on the screen.

This set was actually small but as you can see the camera angle creates an affect that makes this set look to scale. It was just so fascinating to see how this film was pieced together and I can’t wait to see it on the big screen!
