Living in California we spend a lot of time by the water, we spend a lot of time in the sun as well. Melanoma rates in my state are on the rise and have increased 36% in the past 10 years. Last year my Grandmother in law has to have major surgery to remove skin cancer. She is not one of those people who spends a lot of time in the sun so we were all a little shocked to discover she had a spot on her cheek that needed to be removed. It was very eye opening for me and I have recommitted myself to taking care of my skin.
It is also important to me that I start instilling safe sun behaviors in our children, so I always make sure my kids see me applying sunscreen on myself first to set the right example. Now that I am a mom of three girls I know how important it is to take care of my skin, so I’m vigilant about sunscreen and making sure each of our girls is properly protected. I know that I can spend more time worrying about the safety of our girls and spend more time together making memories.

Many studies have shown that kids are more likely to adopt healthy habits, like applying sunscreen, if they see their moms applying it on themselves.
Sparking this simple, healthy behavior change early on may help reduce the likelihood of developing skin cancer later in life. One brand I know well is Neutrogena because it’s the brand that we use and trust. My husband and I both use the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 100+ on ourselves. It never leaves my skin feeling oily or sticky and it works. Even in the hot heat of a California summer Neutrogena sunscreen works so I trust it for myself and for my kids. Personally our girls like the Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids Sunscreen Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 70+. It not only works well but it goes on easy and I can even apply it on wet skin which is always a plus because it makes it easy to reapply as needed.
When it come to sun safety it’s best to start early! Make daily sunscreen application second nature for your kids by having them see you apply sunscreen on yourself. You can find Neutrogena products in stores nationwide and also at Neutrogena.com.

My kids are now 16 and older so it’s hard to get them to think common sense and protection from sun. Honestly, they learn the HARD way. But keeping the products on hand is keeping it in THEIR hands. I do have 7 grandkids and their moms are pretty good about keeping them slathered. When we have them, they make sure they are covered.
Healthy sun habits come from setting good example. And unfortunately we have a sad story that is probably a scare tactic. My brother in law had skin cancer at age 15. They thought they got it all. He died at age 24 when it metasticized, leaving my sister with a 6 month old and 3 year old. Most people, kids especially think of OLD people as getting skin cancer. That is so not true. Knowing a 15 year old in our family had it…that is a health dose of introspect.
Having the palest daughter ever, we started with the sunscreen right away and discussed the importance of taking care of your skin.

I love using Neutrogena products. This is one of the brands my youngest can actually use. She has eczema, so I have to be careful with what skin care products I use for her.
