Come Out To Play – Tips For A Summer Inspired By Play

Toms of Maine kidWhatever happened to get outside and play? To go outside and be gone all for an all-day adventure? The kind that created bumps, bruises, cuts and scrapes? Adventures that included stories and memories.

I had those memories growing up in the mountains. We would play in a creek or ride our bikes as far as we could into the forest. We’d build forts and when it snowed our adventures included sledding and exploring that lasted all day long. It seems more than ever kids won’t have those experiences because play has been replaced with a lot of technology.

I have found with our daughters they are always happiest outside. We’ve always spent a lot of time in the summer playing and exploring outdoors and I hope this summer is another summer inspired by play!

Tips For A Summer Inspired By Play

  • Get Outside – Leave it all behind and get outside! Inspire your children to explore with buckets and fort building essentials like a small rope.
  •  Go Camping – If you live in the city why not plan a camping trip? Find a creek to get muddy in, swim in the lake, take a hike or bike for hours and create simple memories. Camping is a simple summer adventure that packs a lot of fun outdoors!
  •  Host A Day of Play – Invite friends over and create an obstacle course with whatever you have to play with. Jump ropes, bikes, scooters, even hula-hoops are a lot of fun. Spend time encouraging your children to explore and play outdoors with their friends.
After a long day of play you’ll need to fuel up. Bring healthy snacks and plenty of water. CLIF Kid wants kids to be kids and encourages families to feed their adventure and discover new frontiers in the great outdoors—parks, backyards and city sidewalks.

I love Clif bar products and grew up eating them as replacement meals in a pinch during high school sports competitions! We buy the Clif bar kids bars now for my oldest too. It feels so nostalgic!

My kids are going to be going to the park plenty of times this summer! I need to wear them out or none of us will ever get to sleep at night!

Well, today I took away all of their electronics and gave them a choice… clean your rooms or play outside. Guess which one won out, lol.

I grew up in a time where you would get off the bus, drop off your books and run out into the neighborhood. The only rule was to be home by dark unless dinner was before that. I am big on outside play with kiddo. Sadly, right now, we don’t have neighbors as we live in the country in the middle of a corn field. Hopefully we’ll move soon.

Great tips! We love playing outside. In the summer we are rarely inside but lately the weather has been super weird here, we haven’t been getting out much!

This is so true. Outside play is so important and we try to have outside play at least 30 minutes everyday. Weather permitting.

We love the CLif brand for kids. They are so easy for lunches, snacks, or even a breakfast bar if we need to!

Thankfully, my neighbor has a pool and that encourages my kids to get out and get active. I don’t think I would tolerate them sitting in front of a screen all summer.

Looks like a perfect kid day to me! Keeping those kids outside and active is definitely important this summer!

We always enjoy staying active but do so more indoors via rec classes due to super high desert temperatures. Whether inside or out, good snacks are a must!

Love watching my kids play outside. I think it is a big part of farm life. I seem to be the only one who likes going indoors! My kids are either out playing in the backyard or off looking for ripe fruit or veggies. The hardest part is keeping track of them all outside!

  21. Pam says

My kids always enjoyed playing in the water. We would play with the hose or in a kiddy pool for hours.

My kids are on a summer swim team and are constantly in the water. We have also begun taking more hikes as the weather warms up.

Where we live is all the inspiration we need. We have nothing but woods and creeks down here to play in and explore. It’s great.

We get a season parking pass for the beach, so we will be out playing in the sand and water all summer long.

If Band-Aid is still a badge of honor, then I was the most honorable kid on the planet when I was young! LOL 🙂
