With the vacation season swiftly approaching, the pressure is on to find a way to fill those long hot summer days. It’s often hard for families to find entertainment for everybody in the group in a cost-effective way, so here are a few travel ideas for the West Coast area that are fun, and hopefully won’t break the bank too!
California is blessed with a multitude of world-class beaches and it’s just about mandatory for families to spend a few afternoons lazing by the seashore. Particular favourites near Los Angeles include the beaches around Malibu including the iconic Zuma Beach that is not only featured in many films, but also regularly features passing dolphins and seals.
And further up the coast there’s the delights of Ventura which offers easy waves and surfboard rental shops for the budding surfer, and Pismo provides a treasure trove of family-friendly restaurants, boardwalks and lots of highly diverting shopping opportunities!

Going to see the Los Angeles Dodgers is a LA institution. Visiting the famous Dodgers Stadium is a great way to spend the day with the family as it’s centrally located and has a great family-friendly carnival atmosphere. The most anticipated game in the upcoming season has to be on August 31 where the Dodgers play their rivals San Francisco Giants.
The great outdoors
Getting outdoors to enjoy the spectacular Californian sunshine is a must for summer months. It’s a good way to top up your vitamin D levels, and also let the kids burn off some energy too.
Joshua Tree National Park just two hours east of Los Angeles is an otherworldly place to explore. The bizarre joshua trees make for some fantastic photos, and there are also some helpful and clearly labeled signposts for hikes so that you don’t get lost in the desert!
If you’re looking for something a little more lush, then Muir Woods just north of San Francisco is an amazing place to visit for all ages. The spectacular redwood trees that make up Muir Woods are regularly over 200 feet tall, and the rich green tree canopies can offer welcome respite from the summer sun, as well as providing your little ones with a great way explore this wonderful natural environment.
