As the school year starts to wind to an end we are spending even more time together as a family. One thing my girls love to do is cook and bake and as a parent it’s an easy way for me to get them learning hands on. Our five year old is home most of the day and I’m always trying to find ways to keep her busy. She’s learning to read and work with numbers so basic cooing and baking is really beneficial for her.

As a mom I often worry about how much my children are consuming and I am always looking for ways to substitute ingredients. You know how they say if it’s not broken don’t fix it? Those boxed brownie mixes are our favorite because they’re so simple to make and they allow little bakers to easily explore the kitchen.
We decided to use our favorite brownie mix for a super simple brownie but instead of using oil and water we used applesauce and Silk Almond Milk Dark Chocolate. It’s so easy to substitute milk for Silk and we’ve found some very creative ways to incorporate Silk into our every day meals and desserts.
I had our daughter helping read directions and gather ingredients. Her favorite part is helping mix everything together so I also allowed her to do that. It’s so rewarding to see your child’s self confidence boosted because they get to help with tasks around the house. It’s also a great way to spend time together!
We cooked as directed on the packaging and topped it with a chocolate fudge frosting while the brownie cake was still warm. Top with berries and fresh mint and you have a simple dessert that looks and tastes like it took all day to make!
