The can is one of the best ways to get food from the farm to my family’s table. The canning process locks in foods’ freshness, flavor and nutrients at the peak of ripeness, just hours after picking. That means I can serve canned foods anytime, and with confidence that my family is also eating healthy.
I decided to use what canned items I have in my cupboards to make a fresh and tasty meal for my family. I like that with cans I can easily add in foods and create a fresh meal easily.
“Cans Get You Cooking” is a program dedicated to spreading the message that canned foods can be healthy and flavorful options to help start any family meal. I’m guilty of tossing so many veggies because I simply don’t use them fast enough. In fact, 73% of Americans throw away spoiled fruits and vegetables on average two times a week. Cans help make sure nature’s bounty doesn’t go to waste and it’s really a great way to create a fresh and flavorful meal.
I was able to easily find a number of recipes right on the website. I decided on this cream of mixed vegetable soup recipe and put my own twist on it with what I had in my refrigerator.

Yum! I make something really similiar to this only I add in cheddar cheese. It is so filling when it is snowing out or cold. Pair it with a sandwich and it is a great dinner!
