Easy Tips and Tricks For Beating Colds and the Flu

cold and flu tipsbrooklin sick age 3For the past week our entire family has been sick. It started with our two youngest children and slowly spread. Luckily my husband and I have been able to minimize catching their colds with some simple and helpful tips.

As soon as our three year old got sick my husband and I started cleaning things like doorknobs, light switches and chairs that we all touch a lot.

We also upped our hand washing and reminded our kiddos about the importance of washing your hands.

Another thing we have for every room in the house is a simple vaporizer. You can find some pretty affordable ones at any retailer and is really great when you are sick. It’s one of the best ways to combat congestion and colds. With small children in our house we make sure each of our children’s bedrooms has one running.

cold and flu tips

When you are sick or you think you are getting sick it is essential that you eat healthy and whole foods. This time of year I stock up on organic orange juice so our whole family is getting plenty of extra vitamin C.  Making sure you eat whole and balanced meals with plenty of vegetables and good fats will keep you healthy and will also help to support your immunity.

We also stocked up on essential supplies. Things like tissues that won’t harm your nose and cough and fever medicine. Treats like Popsicles also help to calm feverish children.

If anyone gets sick in my house, that’s the next thing I do is disinfect most everything that the person usually touches. The computer mouse, door handles, remote control, drawer knobs, etc!

Ugh! We were hit with the crud as well..

When we get sick we just focus on getting lots of rest and of course fluids. We also have done the whole vapor rub on feet with socks at night. Although it didn’t seem to work for me, my kids have had great results. 🙂

I make my own remedies for them when they are sick. Honey onion cough syrup and elderberry syrup are my favorite two to whip together. I also fix soup and tea.

I hope you guys feel better soon, there have been some awful bugs going around this season! Drinking tea is always a comfort to me when sick. (And when healthy, LOL!)

Sorry to hear about your kiddos – we have been fighting the bug too. I always forget to swipe things down like the door knobs and light switches will definitely do next time.
