Borders – Double-Dog Dare Summer Reading Challenge {$200 Borders Gift Card Giveaway}

School is almost out and you know that that means. Your children have nothing but time in the world. I know as a parent I’m already gathering activities for Kai to get in to. I want to continue her education and make summer educational and filled with fun.As a child my summers were filled with adventures of Ramona Quimby, and the American Girls.

This year Borders is issuing a challenge, a double dog dare of sorts. The Double-Dog Dare Reading Challenge allows your children to earn free books. Children simply read 10 books, fill out the form on the website and earn free books.

It’s so important that we as parents encourage our children to read. For now it’s still my husband and I reading to Kai but she’s quickly learning and anxious to read. One of the best ways parents can grow the love of reading is to read to their children.But in case you need one I have an extra tip to help you.

HarperCollins and Jon Scieszka have provided this week’s tip for getting kids to read. Jon Scieszka, author of Robot Zot and Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing up Scieszka reading tips.

“If you want to inspire your boy reader, expand your definition of reading to include non-fiction, graphic novels, funny books, wordless books, audio books and magazines. Summer reading is a great time to explore texts that aren’t covered/allowed in school reading.”

This year thanks to HarperCollins and Borders I have a gift card to spend on new summer reading books. I was given the gift card in exchange for writing this post and I couldn’t be more happy. Stay tuned for more summer reading books and fun!

    When reading to my children, I would often substitute a wrong word to see if they would catch it and we’d both end up giggling. They love Frog and Toad. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

    Thanks for the giveaway…favorite childhood book was “Treasure Island” by R.L. Stevenson; during the summer when our kids had reading lists I would encourage them by often reading the same titles along with them, one year I re-read “Tom Sawyer” with them !

    I have found that if you bring kids to the bookstore or library and let them choose their books they get enthused about reading. Also, they love to read when they see that I am enjoying what i read.

    I don’t make an issue out of reading. I let children discover reading on their own. I carry them to the library or bookstore to let them look around and choose their own books. I discuss what they are reading with them. My favorite childhood book was Black Beauty.

    I enjoy audiobooks, and now my local libraries offer a huge selection of downloadable audiobooks. Investigate this – they also offer downloadable books than can be read on computers and some readers. My favorite book from Jr. High was, of all things, Murder on the Orient Express.
