Vacation – Redwood Forest, CA

Avenue of the Giants

I’ve seen 18 out of the 50 states. One summer my Grandparents drove us around the country it was the summer my Father died, and I was 10. We saw the Grand Canyon, 4 Corners, Carlsbad Caverns almost every western and central state. It was the time of my life, but nothing quite prepared me for the giant redwoods. It was like we stepped into another planet, a distant land where prehistoric mammals roamed the earth.  Everything was large back then….

I almost expected the trees to just go on and on. But to our surprise there were just groves, small patches of  trees. Most of the massive trees have been cut downand  made into homes. There is so much beauty in those woods, that’s why I love living in Oregon. There is such beauty here, just waiting to be seen. We saw wild turkey’s and Elk with large antlers. You could even pick out the males in the herd living among all those females.

It was refreshing to see life was still naturally moving along. The elk weren’t bothered by us, and no one disturbed them. It seems as if everything natural in our world has been tampered with.Doesn’t it?

Feeling like this makes me feel at peace, seeing it makes me feel refreshed. It was like I released my inner hippie a tree and earth lover. I care about the world I live in, what I feed  my family. This trip was really wonderful and while yes, we did drive through a tree I taught my daughter about how important it is to save our planet.

I look back at the summer of 1995 our three month long road-trip. I learned who my Grandfather was during that trip. I saw the beauty in my nation at the age of 10, and this trip was just another lesson in the life that is much bigger then me.

I urge anyone traveling to take a different path, and see the United States of America.

I married a naval man, and in the first year of our marriage, we moved 13 times! I learned how to live our of boxes. I married naval so that I’d be able to see so much more of our country than anyone else in our families. I am a true Sag, born in early December; and we have difficulty staying in one place for very long. I’m now in the same place for 4.5 years, and the itch to move has begun. Thankfully, with today’s economy, I’m not going to spend money on moving.
