In the past month Brooklin has made so many changes. She now can grasp objects, sit up in her jumbo, lift her head, and even support herself while being held. She also supports weight on her feet and can reach out and grab for things. While so much is changing so fast Brooklin has even begun to show interest in food. So today I let hr try some rice, and while this was just a test I think she enjoyed it.
When is your baby ready to begin soft solids?
- Baby is able to support her own head. (check)
- Baby is interested in food; she watches you eat, stares at your food. (check)
- Baby’s tongue-thrusting reflex is gone or has greatly subsided. (check I think??)
As a breastfeeding mom I think it is best to breastfeed as long as possible. In fact I go to great lengths to make sure Brooklin has milk while I’m at school. You’ll see me on any given day lugging around a Medela Pump In Style® Advanced Breastpump. Someone told me today it look like I was carrying a heavy load, and it is. As much as I would like to keep Brooklin to myself, she is now a gift to the world. She wants to experience things, and going by her cues she wanted to try something. My best advice is listen to your baby, don’t ever let anyone tell you how to parent. Just know that babies can’t digest certain enzymes and its best to talk to your doctor before starting any foods.
Now that I’ve said all this..here’s Brooklin, and her first taste.
When did you introduce rice? Have any advice? Share it!

She’s precious! I wrote about my baby food/when to start solids philosophy recently : http://homewithpurpose.blogspot.com/2009/09/who-says-i-have-to-give-him-any-baby.html
She’s grown so much!! I actually never fed my last two children infant cereal at all. I usually follow the La Leche League philosophy and introduce mashed banana or sweet potatoes at around 6+ months, and then slowly incorporate additional fruits and veggies slowly. It’s not the right option fir some, but it worked well for my babies.
She is doing really good with it! Brooklin really wanted that spoon, lol! She seems to be doing okay (tongue wise) it wasnt coming back out immediately so I think she is okay to keep going on it! Emree has been eating cereal for about a month and a half now and she has also tried carrots (aaahh orange poop!). She seems to like those as well. Are you going to be making your own baby food or buying it from the store? I make ours and it is SOOOO fun! Hope you guys are doing great!
She looks like she enjoyed it!!!
I started Jaxon around 3 months because he could already hold his head up and seemed to not be full with formula anymore, tried it and he loved it!
We started our son on solids at 5.5 months. His first food was avocado- we never did rice cereal.
